Hurricane Preparedness Tips
-
If at any point, you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 immediately.
-
Please ensure that all trash has been disposed of properly in a secure container. Garbage, cardboard, etc. can block storm drains and increase the possibility of flooding.
-
Secure any loose items outside, including furniture, trash cans, grills, or other objects which may be blown around and cause personal injury, property damage or glass breakage.
-
Water intrusion is possible. Please take precautions to cover, or move to higher ground any items such as computers, electronics, important documents or other valuables so that they are protected from roof leaks and/or rising water.
-
Electricity: If you have a power outage, please call Duke Energy at 1-800-777-9898 or 1-800-POWERON or report online at https://www.duke-energy.com/outages

Water:
City Water/Sewer - The water treatment facilities have back-up power as well as the booster stations so there will be safe drinking water to the City’s customers. Even if the power in your house/business goes off, you will still have water available for drinking, bathing (cold) or flushing the toilet. For added insurance you may fill your containers out of your taps for drinking water should there be an issue.
Well/Septic - If you are on a private well or community well system, you are more at risk of not having water in the event of a power outage as you will not have power to pump the water into the house (and can’t flush either). For these folks, it may be advisable to fill a tub to have water to flush toilets. If you have young children in the home that may be at risk for drowning, store water out of their reach. -
Trees: If you have trees blocking city streets, please call Durham One Call - 919-560-1200 or https://durhamnc.gov/1439/Durham-One-Call
-
Power Lines: If you see downed power lines, call 1-800-777-9898 or 1-800-POWERON. Never touch a downed power line with any part of your body or with any object.
-
